Quick story and then I will let you go back to your Saturday of fun. Back in the day, when I worked in the grocery business all the department heads would usually cross paths in the morning in the department head room. We would organize our day and talk over anything we needed to clear up before going down to start our day. That morning, I wasn’t having my usually great perky Cecil kind of day. Being a Front End Manager you are directly in the site of the customer at all times and you have to be the number one customer guru even when you aren’t feeling it. As I started to head down the stairs, my buddy the Produce Manager hollered at me and said, “Hey Rowlett don’t just have a great day, make it a great day!” That one sentence changed my day and became a motto for all my shift managers, cashiers, and carryouts.
I asked him later where
he picked it up and he said from a motivational program he had watched the
night before. His willingness to share something that motivated him made a difference
in the lives of many people that day and hopefully many more as my employees shared
it with their customers. It is like a ripple effect, not unlike throwing a rock
in a pond. When the rock hits the water, it sends out a ripple in all directions
and when those ripples reach the shore they bounce back. My friend chose to
throw a rock into the pond that morning and we may never know the full effect
of the ripples it created.
As you start your week tomorrow,
use Sunday as a practice of how you will act throughout the week. I want to
challenge you to five things this week.
1: Don’t just have a great day, make it a great
day!!!
2: Share something positive with a coworker, even if
it is just a smile.
3: Look for chances to throw a positive rock into a negative pond and mentally record the ripples.
4: Seek out someone you wouldn’t normally talk to at work and ask them how it is going or give them positive feedback.
5: Choose to recognize the small blessings in your daily life and mentally record the positive emotion that you feel at that time.
